The Air Around Your Calathea Matters More Than Almost Anything

Calatheas are native to the humid understorey of Brazilian rainforests, where air moisture rarely dips below 60%. Most homes sit at 30–50%. That gap is why calathea leaves curl.

When humidity drops below what calathea can tolerate, the plant begins losing moisture through its leaves faster than it can absorb it through the roots. The first response is curling — the leaf rolls inward to reduce its exposed surface area and slow water loss. Brown, crispy edges follow when the tissue dehydrates beyond recovery.

The effect is most severe in winter, when central heating dramatically reduces indoor air moisture — sometimes to 20–30%, half what calathea needs. A plant that looked fine through summer will begin curling in October and deteriorate through February without intervention.

Calathea is one of the few houseplants sensitive enough to the chemistry of water that the source alone can cause chronic brown edges — even when humidity, light, and watering frequency are all correct.

Standard tap water contains fluoride, chlorine, and dissolved minerals at levels most plants tolerate easily. Calathea does not. These compounds accumulate in the soil with each watering and eventually reach concentrations that damage the fine root hairs the plant relies on for water uptake.
