There is no universal schedule. But there is a universal method: check the soil, read the plant, adjust for season. This guide gives you the framework to make that call confidently for any plant.

The Honest Answer: It Depends
Every article that tells you to "water once a week" is giving you the wrong answer. Watering frequency isn't a fixed number — it's the output of a set of variables that changes with every season, every room, and every plant.
The most useful mental model: water when the plant asks for it, not when the calendar says so. For most tropical houseplants, that means when the top inch or two of soil has dried out. For succulents and cacti, when the entire soil column is dry. For ferns, before it dries at all. The method — checking the soil before watering — is the one universal rule that applies to every plant in every home.
What "once a week" actually means in practice: in summer, in a bright room, a tropical plant in a terracotta pot might need water every 5 days. The same plant, in winter, in a plastic pot, in a darker spot, might need water every 18 days. A schedule that works beautifully in July will waterlog the same plant by December. This is the single most common cause of indoor plant death: a summer watering habit applied year-round.
Check soil before every watering
Push a finger into the soil to the first knuckle (1 inch) or the second (2 inches). Dry = water now. Damp = wait. This single habit replaces every fixed schedule and applies to all plants.
Does this plant need water today?
Not "when did I last water?" — that's the wrong question. "What does the soil feel like right now?" is the right one. A plant that was watered three days ago may still be moist. A plant in a terracotta pot in direct sun may need water after two days.
Plants show thirst before crisis
Slightly drooping leaves, very slight leaf curl, lighter leaf colour — these are early signals, not emergencies. A plant giving these cues is asking for water, not dying of drought. Catching it here, rather than at crisis point, keeps the plant healthy long-term.
"Once a week" is almost never right
This advice comes from garden centres trying to be helpful. In reality, the correct interval varies from 2 days (some ferns in summer) to 6+ weeks (dormant succulents in winter). Weekly watering applied universally is responsible for more dead houseplants than anything else.
What Changes How Often You Water
Seven variables determine how quickly a plant uses water. Understanding them tells you exactly why a plant in one spot needs different care than the same species in another.
Light level
More light = more photosynthesis = more water consumed. A plant in a sunny south window uses water 2–3× faster than the same plant in a dim north corner. It's one of the most impactful variables and the most frequently overlooked when troubleshooting overwatering.
Temperature
Warmer air means faster evaporation from soil and faster transpiration through leaves. Plants in warm rooms (75°F+) need more frequent watering than those in cooler spaces. Central heating in winter creates warm, dry conditions that accelerate drying — one reason winter overwatering is such a trap.
Pot material
Terracotta is porous — it wicks moisture from the soil through its walls, which is beneficial for plants prone to root rot but means the soil dries faster. Plastic and glazed ceramic retain moisture longer. A plant in terracotta may need watering twice as often as the same plant in plastic.
Pot size relative to root mass
A small plant in a large pot has a large volume of soil with few roots to absorb moisture. This excess soil stays wet long after the plant has taken what it needs, creating overwatering conditions even with correct intervals. Pot size should closely match root mass.
Plant size and growth rate
A large, actively growing plant draws water from the soil faster than a small or slow-growing one. In spring and summer, during active growth, water demand can double. Plants that have just been repotted, or are semi-dormant, need significantly less.
Soil composition
A gritty, well-draining mix (cactus mix, or potting mix with added perlite) dries out faster than standard potting mix. Peat-heavy soils retain moisture much longer and are prone to staying wet at depth even when the surface feels dry. Soil type must match the plant's water needs.
Humidity and air movement
Dry air (below 40%) increases transpiration and soil evaporation, making the plant thirstier and the soil dry out faster. High humidity slows evaporation. Air conditioning and heating systems both reduce humidity and can double the speed at which plants need watering in affected rooms.
Reading the Soil: Six Methods
Knowing when to water is a skill, and it starts with one of these checks. The finger test is usually enough — but some situations call for a more precise approach.
The finger test
Push a finger 1–2 inches into the soil. Moist = wait. Dry = water. Simple, immediate, free. The standard reference for most tropical houseplants — check 1 inch deep for moisture-lovers, 2 inches for most tropicals.
Lifting the pot
A wet pot is noticeably heavier than a dry one. Lift it after watering to learn the "wet weight," then lift before watering — if it feels much lighter, the soil is dry. Especially useful for larger pots where finger depth is limited.
Wooden skewer test
Push a wooden skewer or chopstick to near the bottom of the pot, leave it 60 seconds, then withdraw. Moist soil clings to it. Dry soil doesn't. Reveals moisture levels at root depth that surface tests miss.
Moisture meter
An inexpensive probe that gives a numerical reading from 1 (dry) to 10 (wet). Most tropicals should be watered around 3–4. Succulents at 1–2. Ferns at 5–6. Useful for beginners and large collections, but finger tests are usually sufficient.
Visual surface check
Soil that is pulling away from the pot edge, looking light in colour, or crumbly in texture is dry. Dark, dense-looking soil is moist. Unreliable alone — the surface can look dry while deeper layers are still wet — but useful as a preliminary check.
Root visibility check
For plants in clear nursery pots (orchids, many tropicals), visible root colour is informative. Orchid roots go silvery-grey when dry. Many tropical roots become paler when dry. A quick look through the pot base is often the fastest check of all.
Watering by Season: Reduce in Autumn,
Restore in Spring
The single most impactful change most plant owners can make: reduce watering in autumn and winter. The plant is slowing down. The days are shorter. It needs less.
Plants track the seasons through light. As day length shortens from late August onward, most houseplants naturally slow their growth — reducing their consumption of water, nutrients, and light. The soil dries out more slowly. Yet most owners maintain their summer watering schedule into winter, waterlogging a plant that no longer has the metabolism to process the moisture.
The fix is simple: in September, begin checking the soil more carefully before watering rather than assuming the usual interval applies. By November, most tropicals will need watering 40–60% less frequently. Succulents may need watering once a month or less. Resume the increased frequency in late February or March as new growth begins.
Begin increasing frequency from late February. New growth signals increased water demand. Watch for soil drying faster as warmth and light increase.
Maximum growth = maximum water use. Check every 2–3 days for most tropicals. Ferns and moisture-lovers may need daily attention in warm dry rooms.
The critical transition. Begin reducing frequency from September. Plant growth is slowing. The soil should be drying out more slowly — if it's not, check if heating is keeping it artificially warm.
Reduce frequency by 40–60% from summer. Succulents may need watering monthly or less. Never water on a fixed schedule — always check the soil. Central heating dries soil faster, so continue checking weekly.
Exception: central heating caveat. Homes with strong central heating in winter may see soil dry out faster than expected despite reduced plant activity — the warm, dry air accelerates evaporation even when the plant isn't growing. Always use the soil check as the primary guide; the seasonal rule is a starting point, not a fixed reduction.
The Mistakes That Kill Most
Indoor Plants
Watering errors are responsible for the vast majority of houseplant deaths. Most of them share a common root: watering on a fixed schedule rather than responding to the plant.
Maintaining the same schedule all year
A plant watered every seven days in June is being overwatered if that same interval continues in November. Growth slows, light drops, and evaporation decreases — but the water keeps coming. The soil stays wet, oxygen is excluded from the root zone, and root rot begins silently.
→ In September, start checking soil more carefully before watering rather than assuming the usual interval. Reduce frequency as needed through autumn and winter.
Watering lightly and often (surface watering)
Frequent light watering wets only the top layer of soil. Roots grow toward moisture — if the only consistent moisture is at the surface, roots stay shallow and fragile. Deep, infrequent watering encourages deep roots that make the plant more resilient and better able to go between waterings.
→ When you water, water thoroughly — until it drains freely from the base. Then wait. The cycle should be deep soak, full dry (to the appropriate depth), repeat.
Leaving plants sitting in water
Decorative outer pots without drainage, or saucers never emptied, keep the root zone permanently saturated. This creates anaerobic conditions at the roots — the same environment root rot thrives in. The plant looks fine for weeks until it suddenly collapses.
→ Empty saucers 30 minutes after watering. If using a decorative outer pot, lift the inner nursery pot out, water it separately over a sink, drain completely, then return it.
Using cold water from the tap
Cold water shocks tropical roots that are adapted to warm soil. Repeatedly watering with cold water (below 60°F) causes the same type of stress as cold drafts — gradual cell damage, yellowing, and reduced ability to take up nutrients. The effect is cumulative and easy to confuse with overwatering.
→ Use room-temperature water. Let cold tap water sit for 10–15 minutes before watering, or add a small amount of hot water to bring it up to temperature.
Watering by visual surface check alone
The top of the soil can look and feel dry while the deeper layers remain moist. This is especially common in dense potting mixes or in larger pots. Watering when only the surface is dry — but the root zone is still moist — is one of the subtler paths to overwatering.
→ Check moisture at root depth: push a finger to the second knuckle (2 inches), use a wooden skewer, or lift the pot to feel the weight. Surface checks are supplementary, not primary.
Compensating for too-little watering with a big soak
After a plant has been dry for too long and shows signs of drought stress, the instinct is to give it a large, compensatory watering. While rehydrating the plant is correct, extremely parched soil can become hydrophobic — water runs straight through without being absorbed. The plant remains underwatered despite being "watered."
→ For very dry soil, water slowly in stages, letting each amount absorb before adding more. Or bottom-water by placing the pot in a basin of water for 20–30 minutes, allowing the soil to absorb from below.

Every fixed watering schedule is an approximation that will be wrong some of the time — and wrong in the worst way when the season changes. The system that actually works is the one this guide is built around: read the soil, know your plant type's preference, adjust for the season, and water only when the evidence says to.
