What it looks like

You can read a book without squinting. There's clearly natural light in the room but it doesn't reach this corner. 1–3 metres from a north-facing window, or further from an east or west window.

Plants that thrive: Pothos, peace lily, heartleaf philodendron, Chinese evergreen, parlour palm, prayer plant.

Medium 800–2000 lux

What it looks like

A pleasant, bright room. Near a north-facing window, or 1–2 metres from an east or west window. Natural shadows are visible but soft. Plants look vivid and healthy in this light.

Plants that thrive: Monstera, spider plant, rubber tree, dracaena, Boston fern, most leafy tropicals.

Bright Indirect 2000–10000 lux

What it looks like

Very bright room but no direct sun hits the plant. Within 1 metre of a south or west window, but the sun itself doesn't touch the leaves. Sky is clearly visible. This is the sweet spot most tropical plants want.

Plants that thrive: Pothos, fiddle-leaf fig, philodendrons, orchids, most aroids, peace lily, palms.

The sun shines directly onto the plant — you can see a bright patch of sun on the floor or wall. South or west-facing windowsills in summer. Very few houseplants enjoy this, and most will burn.

How to Measure Light Without Any Tools

You don't need a light meter or an app to assess the light in your room. Three simple tests give you an accurate reading using nothing but your hand, a piece of white paper, and a few minutes of observation.

Bright

Sharp, dark shadow

Hold your hand about 30 cm above a white sheet of paper. If you see a clear, dark shadow with well-defined edges — that's bright light. Good for succulents and herbs.

Medium to Low

Soft, blurry shadow

A faint shadow with fuzzy, indistinct edges means medium to low light. This is where most common houseplants — pothos, philodendron, snake plant — do well.

If you can't make out a shadow at all, the light level is too low for most houseplants. Only the most shade-tolerant species (ZZ plant, cast iron plant) will survive here.

Three More Ways to Check Without a Meter

  • The reading test: Can you comfortably read a book in that spot without switching a light on? If yes, you have at least low light — enough for many houseplants. If it's a strain, it's too dim for most plants.
  • The watch test: At solar noon (roughly 1pm in summer), stand in the spot and look at whether direct sunlight is hitting the floor or wall nearby. Direct sun patches = bright zone. No direct sun but bright room = medium to bright indirect. Comfortable but dim = low light.
  • The sky check: Can you see open sky (not just trees or a wall) from where the plant will sit? If you can, the plant has access to bright indirect light. If all you can see is the ceiling of the room across from a window, light levels are low.
  • The phone screen test: Take a photo of a white sheet of paper in the spot, using your phone at the same exposure setting you used near a window. Compare the two — the difference in brightness of the paper tells you the relative light difference between spots.

If you want a number, free lux meter apps (search "lux meter" in your phone's app store) use your phone camera to estimate light intensity. They're not perfectly accurate but give useful relative readings. A bright windowsill might read 2000–8000 lux. A comfortable reading corner might be 400–800 lux. A dark hallway might be under 100. 📉 Wilting despite wet soil — too much direct sun causes transpiration to outpace root water uptake, so the plant wilts even when adequately watered.
🌿 Curling or rolling leaves — many plants curl their leaves inward or downward to reduce their surface area exposed to intense light.
💧 Soil drying out very quickly — high light drives faster evaporation and higher plant water use. Needing to water every 2–3 days may signal the plant is in too much direct sun.
Too Little

Signs Your Plant Isn't Getting Enough Light

📏 Long, leggy stems with large gaps between leaves — the plant is stretching (etiolating) toward a light source. New growth is smaller and farther from the previous leaf.
🍃 Leaves leaning strongly toward the window — the whole plant leans or twists to angle its leaves toward the nearest light source. Rotate the pot regularly to keep growth even.
🟡 Yellowing lower leaves — in too little light, the plant sacrifices its oldest leaves first, withdrawing chlorophyll to feed the remaining foliage. Lower leaves yellow and drop.
