How to Move Indoor Plants Outdoors Safely
Summer outside is a growth opportunity your houseplants will love — if you introduce them to it gradually. Rush it, and you'll bring sunburned, windblown, pest-ridden plants back inside in a week.
Moving houseplants outside for summer is one of the best things you can do for them — more light, natural humidity, gentle rain, and fresh airflow combine to produce a growth spurt that's impossible to replicate indoors. But the same outdoor environment that makes plants thrive after acclimation can devastate them if they're moved out abruptly. A plant that's spent months in filtered indoor light has leaf cells literally not built for direct sun. Moving it outside without preparation causes sunscorch within hours, not days.

For tropical plants like monsteras, pothos, and calatheas, 50°F nights are borderline; anything below 50°F risks cold damage regardless of how well acclimated the plant is to outdoor light. Check your local forecast for a two-week window of stable temperatures before beginning the transition.

The Hardening Off Process
Hardening off is the gradual exposure of an indoor plant to outdoor conditions — increasing sun, wind, temperature swings, and rain intensity over one to two weeks until the plant can handle the full outdoor environment without stress. It's the single most important step most people skip, and skipping it is why plants come back inside sunburned within days of being moved out.
Place plants in the deepest shade you have outdoors — under a deck, against a north-facing wall, or beneath a dense tree canopy. Keep them outside for just one to two hours in the cooler morning hours, then bring them back in. This isn't about light yet; it's about introducing wind, humidity changes, and air movement.
Move to an area with bright, indirect outdoor light — under light-filtering trees, near (but not in) a patch of morning sun. Extend outdoor time to three to four hours. At this stage, the plant is adjusting to ambient outdoor light intensity, which is significantly brighter than even the sunniest indoor windowsill.
Introduce the plant to direct morning sun — the east-facing or open exposure during the cooler, gentler morning hours. Morning sun (before 11am) is significantly less intense than afternoon sun and is the correct first experience of direct outdoor light. Keep plants sheltered from afternoon direct sun during this period.
By now, leaf cells have begun adjusting — producing more protective pigmentation and thickening cuticle layers. Move the plant to its intended summer position. For most houseplants, this should still be filtered or partial sun rather than blasting full afternoon direct sun, which very few tropical indoor plants genuinely need or can tolerate.

Quarantine every plant returning from outside for at least two to three weeks, even if it looks clean. Inspect leaves (top and bottom), stems, soil surface, and the underside of the pot. A single scale-covered stem missed in the inspection can spread to your entire indoor collection within a month.
