Is Turning Gray
The complete guide to light, soaking, airflow, and the trichome science behind that color change
Grey means thirsty. Green means healthy. Understanding why takes about five minutes — and once you do, air plant care becomes one of the simplest things in your collection.

Air plants in the wild cling to tree branches, cliff faces, and power lines — exposed to hours of bright sky, filtered through canopy, with constant air movement. An east-facing window is their closest indoor equivalent.
Tillandsia are epiphytes — they grow on the surfaces of other plants and objects without soil, absorbing light and moisture through their trichome-covered leaves. In their native range across Central and South America, most species receive several hours of bright indirect light daily, plus shorter periods of direct morning or late-afternoon sun. They never receive harsh midday direct sun in nature, but they are genuinely light-hungry plants.
Indoors, insufficient light is a chronic underperformer among air plant care variables. An air plant in a dim corner will be perpetually grey, slow to recover after soaking, and will never produce the rosette-tightening, colour-intensification, or blooming that well-lit plants display. Aim for the brightest indirect spot you have — within 1–3 feet of a sunny window.
East window — 1–3 ft
Gentle morning direct sun plus bright indirect all day. Most tillandsia species thrive in this position. Recovery after soaking is fastest here.
South or west — filtered
Bright indirect through a sheer curtain, or positioned 3–5 feet from the glass. Strong enough to support active growth and occasional blooming.
North window or low-light room
Survival but not health. Grey colour persists even after soaking. Soak more frequently — every 7 days — to compensate for the lower transpiration rate.
Direct harsh sun
Intense midday sun through south or west glass desiccates air plants rapidly — they lose moisture faster than trichomes can absorb it. Leaves curl, bleach, and brown at the tips within days.
Grow lights are genuinely effective for air plants — more so than for most other houseplants, because trichomes respond to artificial full-spectrum light almost as well as natural light. If your brightest window is still low-light, a grow light set 6–12 inches above for 12 hours a day will transform the plant's health and colour.
Soak, Don't Mist.
Here's Why It Matters.
Misting is widely recommended for air plants. It is also widely insufficient. Trichomes need to be fully saturated to remain open and functional — a light mist wets the surface but doesn't penetrate deep enough to hydrate the cells beneath.
Tillandsia trichomes work by absorbing liquid water that contacts them directly. A mist creates tiny droplets on the leaf surface that evaporate within minutes — before the trichomes can fully open and absorb a meaningful amount. In humid climates, misting supplements natural atmospheric moisture well enough. In the typical home environment, it doesn't come close to what the plant needs.
The correct method is submersion. Place the air plant upside down in room-temperature water for 1–4 hours. The full submersion ensures every trichome on every leaf makes sustained contact with water. After soaking, shake off excess water and place upside-down to drain for 1–4 hours before returning to its display position. This is critical — water sitting in the centre of the rosette (the base of the leaves) will cause rot.
Full submersion soak
Every trichome on every leaf surface contacts water for 1–4 hours. Full cell saturation achieved. Plant turns noticeably greener within an hour of soaking. Recovery from dehydration requires soaking, not misting.
Use as primary methodMisting between soaks
Useful as supplementary moisture in dry climates or hot summer months. Does not replace soaking. Misting alone leads to chronic dehydration — the plant appears damp but the cells beneath the leaf surface remain dry.
Supplement, never replaceUse room-temperature water
Fill a bowl or basin with room-temperature water. Avoid cold water — it shocks the plant and causes trichomes to close. Tap water is fine; filtered or rainwater is better if your tap is heavily chlorinated.
Submerge upside down for 1–4 hours
Place the air plant fully submerged, leaves-down. 1 hour is the minimum for a healthy plant. Dehydrated or severely grey plants benefit from a longer 3–4 hour soak. Do not exceed overnight — extended soaking without drainage time causes rot.
Shake and place upside down to drain
After soaking, gently shake excess water from the leaves. Place the plant upside down (base up) on a dry towel or rack for at least 2–4 hours — or until no water remains in the rosette centre. This step is non-negotiable: trapped moisture in the rosette causes crown rot within days.
Return to bright, airy spot to finish drying
Once the rosette is drain-dry, return the plant to its display position. Good airflow is essential at this stage — it allows the remaining surface moisture to evaporate from the trichomes, enabling them to open again and complete the water-absorption cycle.
Repeat every 1–2 weeks
In summer or dry heated rooms: every 7 days. In winter or higher humidity: every 10–14 days. The plant's colour tells you: if it's still greener than it was before soaking, it hasn't fully dried yet and probably doesn't need another soak. If it's returned to grey, it's time.
Airflow: The Forgotten Variable
Most air plant guides mention airflow briefly and move on. It is, in fact, the variable that makes every other piece of care advice work — or fail.
Trichomes work as a two-way system: they open to absorb water when wet, and close when dry to protect the plant from desiccation. For the trichomes to open again after soaking, the surface moisture must first evaporate — which requires moving air. In stagnant air, moisture sits on the leaf surface for too long, trichomes stay partially closed, and chronic dampness creates the conditions for rot and fungal growth.
In the wild, epiphytic tillandsia are never in still air — they grow on exposed branches and cliff faces where breezes are constant. Indoors, they need to be positioned where air moves. Near a window that's occasionally opened, in a room with a ceiling fan on a low setting, or simply not tucked into an enclosed glass container without a vent. A glass terrarium without an opening is one of the most common ways to kill an air plant.
No airflow: Rot risk
Moisture stays on leaves for hours after soaking. Trichomes can't cycle properly. Crown rot develops where water pools in the rosette centre.

Why Your Air Plant
Is Turning Gray
Grey is the trichome's default resting state. Green is trichomes holding water. Most grey air plants simply need water — but there are five other reasons it can happen, and knowing which one applies changes the fix.
Grey / Silver
The trichome scales have contracted. No water is being held between the cells. The silvery appearance is the dry structural scale itself. This is how all tillandsia look when not recently hydrated — it is normal at the start of a dry cycle, concerning if persistent.
Green / Bright
Trichomes are flat and filled with water, revealing the green chlorophyll beneath. This is the healthy, post-soak state. The plant maintains this colour for several days after a good soak before gradually returning to grey as moisture is used up.
Chronic dehydration
Not enough soaking, or soaking too infrequently for the environment. Plant has been grey for more than a week. In dry, warm rooms this happens faster than most owners expect.
→ Start with a 3–4 hour soak. Increase frequency to every 7 days.
Insufficient light
In low light, photosynthesis is reduced and the plant produces less chlorophyll. Even after soaking, the green colour is less vivid and fades faster than it would in a bright spot.
→ Move to a brighter indirect position or add a grow light.
Poor trichome cycling
In stagnant air, wet trichomes can't complete their dry cycle. The plant may be damp on the surface while still grey — a confusing state that often leads to over-watering.
→ Improve airflow. Let the plant fully dry between soaks before soaking again.
Naturally silver cultivars
Some tillandsia species (T. xerographica, T. tectorum) are silvery-grey even when fully hydrated — they have more densely packed trichomes. Checking species identity prevents unnecessary over-watering.
→ Research your specific cultivar. Xeric species are naturally silver. Look for firmness, not colour, to assess health.
Post-soak drying phase
Gradual return to grey 3–7 days after a good soak is completely normal. The trichomes are drying as designed. Grey at day 7 is the signal to soak again, not an emergency.
→ No action until grey for several days. Then soak as normal.
Post-bloom senescence
After flowering, the parent plant slowly dies — it's a monocarpic cycle. Grey that persists despite soaking, combined with dried and curling leaves, may indicate the plant has completed its lifecycle. Look for pups (offsets) at the base to continue the plant's lineage.
→ Detach and grow offsets once they reach 1/3 the parent's size.
Reviving a Dehydrated
Air Plant
Most air plants that appear dead — shrivelled, almost completely grey, with curling leaves — are recoverable. The trichomes are dormant, not destroyed. Water, light, and airflow are enough to bring them back.
Assess honestly
If the plant has brown, dried-out sections at the tips but the base and younger leaves still feel slightly flexible, it's recoverable. If the entire plant is completely dry, brown, and papery all the way to the base, the cells may be permanently damaged. But try soaking before discarding.
→ If base leaves still have any give, proceed with revival.
Extended soak — 4–8 hours
For severely dehydrated plants, a single normal soak isn't enough. Submerge for 4–8 hours. If the plant is extremely desiccated, you may need to repeat this over 2–3 consecutive days with 8-hour drying periods between.
→ Watch for colour beginning to return to inner leaves first — that's the signal it's working.
Drain and dry with airflow
Critical at every stage of revival: shake off excess water, invert to drain, and ensure good airflow around the plant. Rot kills faster than dehydration — never shortcut the drying step even when urgency feels high.
→ 2–4 hours inverted, in a breezy spot, before any display positioning.
Bright light during recovery
Move the plant to the brightest indirect light available during revival. Light is needed to activate chlorophyll production as the plant rehydrates. A recovering tillandsia in dim light stays grey longer and absorbs water less efficiently.
→ East window or grow light during recovery period.
Remove irrecoverably dry leaves
Once the plant has greened up, pull or cut away any leaves that remain completely brown and dried at the base. These won't recover and the plant directs no resources to maintaining them. Pull gently from the outer edge inward — they should release cleanly.
→ Outer leaves first. Leave anything with any green, even partially.
Increase soak frequency
A plant that reached severe dehydration was not being watered often enough for its environment. After revival, establish a firm weekly soaking schedule and stick to it. Check colour between soaks — if grey returns within 4–5 days, increase to every 5–6 days.
→ Use the grey→green colour shift as your soaking timer going forward.
The single best indicator of a healthy, well-cared-for air plant: it turns visibly greener within 30–60 minutes of being submerged. If your plant doesn't change colour during soaking, it may have structural trichome damage — or it may be a naturally silver xeric species. Either way, good light and consistent soaking are the starting point for any improvement.

The trichome is the entire story of air plant care. Once you understand that grey = dry trichomes and green = hydrated trichomes, every care decision becomes intuitive: soak when grey, drain completely after soaking, ensure air moves across the plant, and give it enough light to keep the chlorophyll active. That's it. Air plants are genuinely low-maintenance once those four variables are in place — and the colour change is the most honest feedback system of any plant in this series. Watch the leaves, not the calendar.
