Moisture retention

Drainage Tips That Actually Matter
The best soil mix for indoor plants is undone by poor drainage setup. The mix itself is only part of the system — how you layer the pot, what container you use, and what you don't do matters just as much as what's in the bag.
Always use pots with drainage holes
No mix, however well-formulated, can compensate for a pot without drainage. Water accumulates at the base, creating a perched water table that roots suffocate in regardless of what's above. Use a nursery pot with drainage holes inside a decorative cachepot — empty the cachepot within 30 minutes of watering.
Skip the gravel drainage layer myth
Adding a layer of gravel or stones to the bottom of a pot does not improve drainage — it actually raises the perched water table upward into the root zone. Never compact the mix when potting
Firmly pressing and compacting soil around roots destroys the air pockets you've worked to create. Tap the pot gently on a surface to settle the mix, then water to allow it to settle further naturally. Hands pressing down around a root ball will compact the upper root zone and reduce drainage from the moment of potting.

Garden soil works fine for houseplants
Garden soil compacts in containers, loses aeration within weeks, may harbour pests or diseases, and is usually too heavy and moisture-retentive for indoor pots. It's free, but it reliably produces worse results than any commercial potting mix. Never use unsterilised garden soil in indoor containers.
A more expensive potting mix is always better
Premium mixes often contain more perlite, better-quality bark, and worm castings — these are genuinely better. You need to change all the soil every year

Practical Tips for Mixing Your Own Soil
- Start with a commercial base, then amend. You don't need to build from scratch. A quality commercial potting mix plus 20–30% perlite handles the majority of houseplants. Custom mixes are for specialists and specific species — not a requirement for healthy plants.
- Mix in bulk and store the remainder. Preparing a 10-litre batch of your standard mix and storing it in a sealed container or bag is far more efficient than making small batches for each repotting. Label the container with the mix ratios so you can reproduce it exactly.
- Moisten peat-based mixes before potting. Completely dry peat is hydrophobic and can repel the first watering after repotting. Dampen the mix slightly before use — not wet, just no longer bone dry — and it will absorb water normally from the first watering.
- Assess the mix on a 12–18 month cycle. Organic components decompose over time, gradually making the mix denser and more moisture-retentive. If you notice your soil drying significantly more slowly than before, or the surface compacting after watering, the mix has broken down and it's time to repot into fresh medium.
