How to Bottom Water Correctly

Choose the right container

You need a basin, tray, bucket, or sink large enough to hold the pot with water reaching at least halfway up its sides. A terracotta or plastic pot works for both methods — but the pot must have drainage holes. No holes, no capillary action.

Fill with room-temperature water

Cold water shocks tropical roots. Fill your basin with water that's been sitting at room temperature, or add a small measure of hot water to raise the temperature. The water level should reach roughly halfway up the pot — enough to create the capillary gradient without flooding.

Set the pot and wait — 20 to 45 minutes

Place the pot in the water and leave it. You'll often see small bubbles rising from the drainage holes as air escapes and water enters — this is correct. The time needed depends on pot size and soil dryness. A small 4-inch pot may be done in 20 minutes; a 10-inch pot may take 45 minutes or more.

Test the surface moisture to know when you're done

The soak is complete when you can press a finger into the top inch of soil and feel moisture — the water has risen all the way through. If the surface still feels bone dry, leave it longer. Don't rely on time alone — check the soil to confirm.

Remove and drain completely

Lift the pot out and set it on a rack or over a sink to drain for 5–10 minutes. The pot should drain freely — if it's slow, the drainage holes may be partially blocked. Once drained, return to its normal position. Do not let it continue sitting in the basin water — that creates the standing water root rot conditions you're trying to avoid.

Bottom watering doesn't flush mineral salts from the soil — they accumulate with fertiliser use. Every 4–6 weeks, do a full top watering (pour until water drains freely from the base) to flush the accumulated salts. This prevents the white crusty deposits on soil and pot edges that indicate mineral build-up.

Use a large plastic storage tote or a kitchen sink to soak 4–8 small pots simultaneously. All get even moisture while you do something else. More efficient than individual soaks for collections of 6-inch pots and under.

When to top water instead

Your plant is in a pot without drainage

Bottom watering absolutely requires drainage holes. A plant in a sealed pot or terrarium can only be watered from the top, in controlled amounts. If you're using a cachepot, remove the inner pot to bottom water it separately, then drain before returning.

A quick pour that wets only the surface encourages shallow roots and never fully saturates the root zone. The bottom inch of soil stays permanently dry. When you top water, do it thoroughly — until water flows freely from the base.

Leaving the pot in the basin too long

Plants left soaking for hours don't absorb more water — they just sit in standing water at the root zone, which is overwatering territory. The goal is saturation, not submersion. Once the surface is moist, the soak is done.

African violets, most succulents, orchids, and any plant with a central crown should not have water poured into the middle — crown rot follows quickly. With these plants, aim for the soil surface only, or switch to bottom watering entirely.
