Pot size is one of the most consequential decisions in houseplant care — and one of the most commonly gotten wrong. Too small, and roots become strangled and stressed. Too big, and the excess soil stays wet far longer than the plant can use, leading directly to root rot.

Most people think bigger is safer. It isn't. A plant in a pot that's 10 cm too wide will sit in persistently waterlogged soil even with perfect watering habits, because the roots can't absorb moisture fast enough from all that extra compost. The right pot is one that fits the root system — not the one that gives the plant "room to grow." 🌸 The Exception: Plants That Like Being Root-Bound

A few plants actively perform better when slightly root-bound: peace lilies, spider plants, and some orchids all flower more readily when their roots have filled the pot. For these species, hold off repotting until the plant is clearly pot-bound (roots circling the base, soil drying within a day or two) rather than repotting on a schedule. When you do repot, go up only 2 cm in diameter — not more. Overpotting a plant that prefers snug conditions is one of the most common reasons these plants stop flowering.

Repotting Tips

Repotting at the right time and in the right way makes the difference between a plant that transitions smoothly and one that drops leaves and sulks for months. Follow these steps to minimise stress and maximise recovery.

Choose the Right Time

Repot in spring when growth is starting, or early summer. Avoid repotting in winter when growth is slow and the plant is least able to establish new roots. Repotting during active growth allows the plant to quickly develop roots into new soil and recover from any transplant stress within weeks rather than months.

Water 24–48 Hours Before Repotting

A slightly moist root ball holds together better than a dry one during the removal process, and moist roots are less likely to be damaged by the minor stress of repotting. Don't water immediately before — you want the soil damp but not sodden. Bone-dry root balls crumble and fall apart, making the process more disruptive.

Choose the New Pot Carefully

Select a pot no more than 2–4 cm wider in diameter than the current one. Ensure it has drainage holes. If the new pot is terracotta, soak it in water for 30 minutes before use — dry terracotta absorbs moisture from the potting mix and can dry it out too rapidly immediately after repotting.

Loosen the Root Ball Gently

Once the plant is out of its old pot, gently loosen the outer roots with your fingers. This is especially important for root-bound plants whose roots have been circling the pot base — circling roots left intact can eventually strangle the plant. Never reuse old potting mix — it has broken down structurally, may carry pathogens, and has depleted nutrients. Use fresh mix appropriate to the plant type. Add perlite to improve drainage (20–30% for most tropicals; 40–50% for succulents and cacti). Don't overfill — the soil surface should sit about 2 cm below the pot rim to leave room for watering.

Position and Backfill

Add a small amount of fresh mix to the base of the new pot, then place the plant so its soil surface will sit at the correct height. Fill around the sides with fresh mix, pressing gently but not compacting. Leave no large air pockets around the root ball — these dry out roots.

Water the repotted plant once to settle the soil and help roots make contact with the new medium. Allow the water to drain fully. Then allow the top 3–4 cm to dry out before watering again — this encourages roots to grow outward seeking moisture. Do not fertilise for 4–6 weeks after repotting; fresh potting mix contains sufficient nutrients for the establishment period.

Some leaf drop and temporary wilting after repotting is completely normal — the plant is re-establishing its root-to-leaf water balance. Keep the plant in consistent, appropriate light (neither brighter nor dimmer than before) and avoid moving it for at least 2–3 weeks. Resist the temptation to water more during recovery — overwatering is the most common post-repot mistake.

Best for drought-tolerant plants

Terracotta

Porous clay that allows moisture to evaporate through the pot wall as well as from the soil surface. Soil dries significantly faster than in plastic — a meaningful benefit for succulents, cacti, snake plants, and any plant prone to root rot. Heavy, stable, and aesthetically timeless. The best choice for over-waterers and slow-drying soil mixes. Must be soaked before first use.

Best for moisture-loving plants

Plastic

Non-porous — moisture can only leave through the soil surface and drainage holes. Soil stays moist longer, which suits moisture-loving plants like ferns, Calatheas, and prayer plants. Lightweight, affordable, and available in every size. The default for most nursery plants. Not ideal for overwatering-prone situations without adjusting watering habits accordingly.

Best for orchids

Clear Plastic / Orchid Pots

Transparent walls allow visual monitoring of root health and moisture levels — roots should be pale and silvery when dry, green when moist. Especially useful for Phalaenopsis orchids, which have photosynthetic roots that benefit from light exposure. Also good for any plant where root rot has been a previous problem and visual monitoring is desired.

Aesthetics with drainage control

Ceramic & Glazed

Glazed ceramic is essentially non-porous like plastic — the glaze seals the clay. Behaves similarly to plastic for moisture retention. Heavier than plastic and more decorative. Unglazed ceramic behaves like terracotta. Always ensure drainage holes are present; decorative ceramic pots used as outer covers (with an inner plastic pot) are a popular solution.

Large plants, outdoor use

Fibreglass & Resin

Lightweight non-porous alternatives to heavy ceramic or stone pots. Behave like plastic for moisture retention. Available in large sizes suitable for substantial indoor plants (fiddle-leaf figs, large rubber trees, bird of paradise). Weather-resistant if moving plants between indoor and outdoor positions seasonally.

Fabric Grow Bags

Highly porous fabric containers allow air-pruning of roots — when roots reach the bag wall, they are naturally pruned by exposure to air rather than circling. This produces a dense, fibrous root system. Useful for propagation and fast-growing plants. Not decorative but excellent for root health. Soil dries quickly — almost as fast as terracotta.

Every pot used for a houseplant should have drainage holes. Plants kept in pots without drainage sit in accumulated water after every watering session, creating persistently anaerobic conditions at the root zone that directly cause root rot.
