Potting Soil vs Garden Soil: What's the Difference?
They look similar in the bag. They're both brown, both called "soil," and both come from garden centres. But put garden soil in a pot and you'll understand the difference within weeks — and not in a good way. Here's what separates them and why it matters.
Garden soil and potting mix are engineered for fundamentally different environments. One relies on the infinite depth, biological richness, and gravitational drainage of an open ground system. The other has to create all of those conditions independently, inside a sealed container, with no outside help. Using them interchangeably — as many gardeners do — explains a significant proportion of houseplant failures that get blamed on watering, light, or bad luck.

Why Garden Soil Is Bad for Pots
Garden soil works brilliantly in the ground because the ground compensates for its limitations. Gravity drains water into infinite depth below the root zone. Earthworms constantly aerate and restructure dense layers. Mycorrhizal fungi extend roots' effective range far beyond the immediate soil volume. Freeze-thaw and wet-dry cycles physically break up compaction each season.
In a pot, none of these compensating mechanisms exist. The container is a closed system. What goes in stays in. Water has nowhere to go except the drainage holes — and garden soil, with its clay-heavy particle structure, holds water tightly and prevents that drainage. The result plays out in a predictable sequence.
Compacts within weeks
The clay and silt particles in garden soil are flat and platelet-shaped — they align horizontally under the weight of repeated watering, creating dense, impermeable layers. A pot of garden soil that was workable at planting often becomes a solid, shrinking block within a month, pulling away from the pot walls as it dries and cracking across the surface.

Even when drainage holes are clear, water doesn't move freely through compacted garden soil. Instead, it saturates the lower root zone — creating an anaerobic, waterlogged area at the base of the pot even when the surface appears dry. In the ground, soil nutrients are constantly replenished by decomposing organic matter, weathering minerals, and the biological activity of the soil ecosystem. In a pot, these inputs stop. Common Mistakes — and What to Do Instead
- Using garden soil to "save money" on potting mix. The cost of replacement plants, the time spent diagnosing decline, and the frustration of watching a healthy plant deteriorate far exceeds the few pounds saved on a bag of potting mix. This is one false economy that reliably costs more than it saves.
- Mixing garden soil into potting mix to "add nutrients." Even a 50/50 blend significantly increases compaction, reduces drainage, and introduces pathogens. If you want to add nutrients to a potting mix, use worm castings or a slow-release fertilizer — not garden soil.
- Assuming a plant in garden soil is fine because it hasn't died yet. Garden soil in containers causes slow, progressive decline rather than sudden collapse. A plant may look acceptable for one season while root health deteriorates invisibly. The problem typically becomes visible in year two when recovery is much harder.
- Using potting mix in open-ground garden beds. Potting mix is expensive relative to garden soil and degrades faster in open-ground conditions where it doesn't need to function as a self-contained system. In a garden bed, quality topsoil or compost-amended native soil is the better, more economical choice.
- Not amending potting mix before use. Commercial potting mix is a reasonable starting point but almost always benefits from 20–30% perlite added before potting. The extra step takes minutes and significantly improves drainage, aeration, and the long-term structural life of the mix in the container.
