What Do Scale Insects Look Like?

Because scale insects are stationary, well-camouflaged, and rarely look like conventional insects, they are easy to confuse with natural plant features. Learning their distinctive appearance is the key to early detection.

How Scale Insects Damage Plants

Scale insects cause harm through two distinct mechanisms: direct sap extraction and the secondary effects of their honeydew secretion. Unlike thrips or spider mites, scale insects feed slowly and persistently, and the damage they cause accumulates gradually — which is why infestations are often advanced before symptoms are noticed.

Direct Damage

Feeding extracts phloem sap continuously, depleting the plant of nutrients and water. Affected areas turn yellow or pale, growth slows or halts, and leaves may drop. On woody stems, repeated feeding kills bark tissue.

To confirm an insect is dead: try to dislodge the shell with a fingernail or toothpick. A live scale will resist removal and leave a small wet mark on the stem where it was feeding. A dead one will come away cleanly and reveal a dry, hollow interior. Do this test across multiple individuals before declaring a treatment successful.
